Collingwood College is one of the most modern of all Durham University’s colleges. Surrounded by beautiful and tranquil woodland the College offers all the essential amenities for a stay in Durham.

The high standard of accommodation includes 200 bedrooms with full ensuite facilites: private shower, toilet and hand basin, built-in wardrobe, tea/coffee making facilities and radio alarm clocks. Sixteen of these ensuite rooms are twin occupancy and a further nine are adapted for wheelchair users. Another 300 comfortable standard single bedrooms are available, which are fully carpeted and centrally heated with their own wash basin. Showers and toilets are conveniently located on each floor along with kitchenettes with microwaves.

All rooms have bed linen (duvets) and towels provided in all rooms. The rooms are serviced daily and the price includes a full English Breakfast.

For guests requiring easy access, ground floor rooms in both ensuite and standard rooms are available on request.

Accommodation is available during University vacations, which are around Easter and throughout July, August and September.

History to the present day

Collingwood opened its doors in 1973 and was set up as Durham’s first mixed college. It also saw itself, from the very beginning, as very informal –it didn’t have gowns, or graces, and relations between students and staff were always very warm.

In 1992, Collingwood doubled its size. It built a series of new wings with spacious ensuite rooms around a croquet-lawn and amphitheatre.

Dining and drinking

Our rates include a full English breakfast served between 8am and 9am in the College Dining Hall.

The college bar is generally open most evenings from 6 to 11pm. Check at receptions for opening times.

Grounds and gardens

The College grounds have a meadow, a croquet lawn, a BBQ area and an all weather tennis court/5 a side pitch.

Guests can also relax in the beautiful surrounding woodland and adjacent Botanical Garden or take a stroll down the hill and along the banks of the River Wear into the heart of Durham City.

Other facilities

Wi-Fi access is available in the bar and Junior Common Room (ask at reception for a login and password).

Customer feedback

Jane Baker, August 2010: We really enjoyed the experience of staying at the University. As we were accompanying our son to a department open session it proved invaluable in giving him a really good feel for the uni. We thoroughly enjoyed visiting Durham - what a magical place - thanls a lot. Regards Jane Baker and Family

jane de rome, August 2010: Excellent value for money and a chance to experience a college at Durham. Very useful for prospective students and an economical way to visit Durham.

Jennifer Gillies, August 2010: Clean room and shower. Lovely setting and walk into town. Refectory offered good range of food. A bit strange not having a television, which has been available at other halls of residence I've stayed in. However, it probably did me good not to have it! A most enjoyable stay.

Mrs T M Walker, August 2010: We had a very pleasant stay at Collingwood, never having lodged in university accommodation before we enjoyed the experience. Due to the summer schools, etc. the place was busy in a friendly & relaxed way which made our little holiday more interesting than had we stayed in a private house offering bed & breakfast. We were impressed by the variety of choice for breakfast (though did not think much of the scrambled egg - our only complaint!) the staff in the dining room were particularly helpful & nice.

Mrs Audrey Porter, August 2010: Pleasant and helpful staff. Really enjoyed our visit.

Hazel Frei-Selby, August 2010: I enjoyed my stay at Collingswood but next time I'd rather take a more upgraded standard of room - but anyway I found everyone really helpful and pleasant especially the girls who do the breakfast room.

Desmond Platt, July 2010: Eco kettle was a nuisance! I am very green but found it impossible to fill flask without water going everwhere.

Michael Rose, July 2010: We joined up with a small group totalling 5 in number who were using college accomodation for the first time. It was a very enjoyable experience in an amazing location. Very central to all we planned to do during our stay.
